Chapter Twenty Three

My ankle felt better by the time the sun came up on the fifth day of my entrapment in the future. It was still a little sore when Ben twisted it all around like a toy, but I was sure I could walk on it now.

“You were right,” I declared happily.

“Did you doubt?” He chuckled, quickly running his finger along my jaw line.

Grinning wide, I watched him move to the box. “What's for breakfast?”

“There's not much to choose from,” Ben apologized, taking the bread from the box. “This will have to do for now.”

“Just what I wanted,” I exclaimed, taking the offered meal. “My Aunt Lottie puts pizza sauce and melted cheese on this kind of bread.

“A few more days and you can have it again.” He smiled almost sadly.

“So,” I mumbled around my mouthful of bread, “what's on the agenda today?” I grinned. “Will we look at rocks or,” I let my eyes grow wide, “wiggle our toes in the water?”

Ben laughed and shook his head. “Don't get too excited,” he warned.

“What are we going to do?” I asked again, not forgetting that he said we would be moving today.

“Today…” Ben took a bite of bread and chewed it very slowly. Only after he swallowed did he speak again. “Today we will go to the metal house.”

I laughed loudly and stuffed more bread into my already full moth. “Really, though,” I mumbled, “what do you have planned?”

“Really.” He looked up, and our eyes met. “We're going to the metal house.”

The bread was suddenly dry in my mouth—so dry that I couldn't actually swallow it. Maybe I hadn't heard him right. Did he really say we were going back to the metal house? Why would we do that?

With great difficulty and a gulp of water, I managed to get my food down my throat. “Why would you say that?” I demanded.

“We must.”

“But why?” I put the bread aside so I could rise up to my knees.

“It seems that is our path now.”

“I can't take you seriously when you say things like that.” I turned my head so I didn't have to look at him. Outside, the clouds were still gathering to bring a storm to us. Maybe the storm was messing with his smoke messages. No way did he hear them right if they were telling him to go back to the metal house after all the trouble it took to escape it.

“Here.” Ben reached into the box and pulled out a deep metal dish.

My heart twanged at the sight. What was a metal bowl doing out here? Inside the bowl was an array of fruit that was already sliced.

“Where did you get that, Ben?” I asked weakly, already knowing his answer.

“Eat,” he ordered softly. “You'll need your strength to get back to the metal house before the storm starts.”

“Let's follow the river instead,” I suggested desperately. “We can find Kadence and the others.”

“No. We...”

“Won't it be safer with them?” I pressed my fingers into his arm.

“You have to return home,” he reminded me, still trying to pass me the fruit.
